Russell’s eighth place ends Antonelli’s chance to clinch the F1 title in Austin

George Russell was running eighth late in the United States Grand Prix, putting Kimi Antonelli’s chance to clinch the Formula 1 title in Austin out of reach. Antonelli needed Russell to finish ninth or lower; the Mercedes driver had no immediate pressure from behind and could not get past Oscar Piastri in seventh.

To be crowned in Austin, Antonelli also had to win and Lewis Hamilton had to finish fifth or lower. Antonelli was still leading the race, but the title would carry over to the next round in Mexico City.
