Oliver Bearman said he sent Esteban Ocon a message after Haas replaced the Frenchman with Ryo Hirakawa for the rest of the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend. Bearman said he did not know exactly what had happened between Ocon and the team, calling it a “really tough situation” and adding that such episodes are never happy ones.

Haas announced the change on Saturday morning in Mexico City but gave no conclusive reason, saying only that it was not related to illness. After a report appeared in the media, Ocon said no incident of physical violence had led to his benching.

Bearman also said he had been helping Hirakawa prepare for his grand prix debut. He was pleased his team-mate would get his first F1 experience, but described the circumstances as challenging and sad.
