Stefano Domenicali called Kimi Antonelli’s first Formula 1 world title historic after the Italian secured the championship in Mexico. The F1 boss congratulated him after the race, praising Antonelli’s exceptional talent, courage and determination and noting that he had become the sport’s youngest champion.

The result had particular resonance for Domenicali, himself Italian. He said Antonelli was the first Italian Formula 1 world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, adding that Italy had waited 73 years for the moment.

Domenicali said Antonelli had captured the imagination of millions of fans and could inspire children around the world. He was convinced, he added, that the title marked the beginning of an extraordinary legacy.
