Lando Norris is pleased Kimi Antonelli has the right to use Formula 1’s No. 1, though the new champion plans to keep his familiar No. 12. The champion’s number will therefore be absent from the grid in 2027.
Lando Norris is glad Kimi Antonelli will be entitled to use Formula 1’s No. 1 after the 2026 season. The new champion has said he will keep his familiar No. 12, so the number will not appear on the grid in 2027.
Speaking to media including RacingNews365, Norris said Antonelli had done a great job this season and deserved the honour, whether or not he chose to race with No. 1. He added that the Italian has many more years than him to fight for another title. Norris also said it was a shame to see the number disappear from the grid.
Reflecting on his year carrying No. 1, Norris said it made no physical difference but had a special meaning to him mentally. Going on track as world champion and seeing his name alongside drivers he had admired as a child was a source of pride; he named Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton among them.
Norris said the number did not make him feel superior or entitled. Instead, seeing it on his McLaren reminded him of a shared achievement with the team and everyone he had worked with.
