Verstappen backs Mekies as the right Red Bull team principal

Max Verstappen says Laurent Mekies is the right team principal for Red Bull. In an interview with Sport Bild, he said he could not name another boss in the Formula 1 paddock he would choose in Mekies's place. Verstappen also acknowledged that he and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff talk often and get along well.

Mekies took over as team principal from Christian Horner in 2025. Red Bull made clear progress under the Frenchman during the 2026 season and gave him a new contract. Mekies's technical background also makes it easier for Verstappen to discuss technical matters with him quickly, unlike with Horner.
