Martin Brundle believes Liam Lawson has done enough to remain in Formula 1. If Racing Bulls do not retain him for 2027, Brundle says he could take a substitute role or quickly find another seat.

Martin Brundle believes Liam Lawson has done enough to stay in Formula 1, even if Racing Bulls do not retain him for 2027. The former F1 driver said Lawson could become a ‘super sub’ or quickly find another seat elsewhere.

Lawson was still waiting to learn whether the team would keep him. In 2026, he had regularly reached the points and sat ninth in the drivers’ championship, the highest-placed driver outside the top four teams. He also faced competition for his seat from F2 title contender Nikola Tsolov, who made his FP1 debut with Racing Bulls in Mexico.

Brundle told Sky F1 the situation was ‘very strange’ and described F1 as a ‘brutal business’, where a driver can get a chance because another has been pushed out. He praised Lawson’s performances but said the decision depended on ‘what the team wants to project for the future’.
