Verstappen said he was boxed in during the opening corners, then looked for grip on different lines and quickly passed the cars ahead. He started 21st and finished second in Brazil.

Max Verstappen started 21st and finished second in the Brazilian Grand Prix, reaching the top ten within a few laps. In a post-race interview with Viaplay, he said he was boxed in by too many cars in the opening corners, then searched for grip on different lines and passed the cars ahead quickly.

Verstappen said he had often practised the approach with his father when he was younger. The opening laps matter, he said: staying trapped too long can leave a driver too far behind the leaders, making the later switch to slick tyres difficult. He said they were in a good position when they eventually switched to slicks.
