After Saturday’s qualifying in Mexico, Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies said the team’s data showed Max Verstappen was close to pole. Traffic cost Verstappen time on his final lap, Mekies said, but he added that Red Bull could not know how the lap would have gone without it.
Verstappen qualified fourth, but a one-place grid penalty after an incident in second practice put him fifth on the grid. Lewis Hamilton took pole.
