Brundle says Russell must raise his game to beat Antonelli

Martin Brundle says George Russell must find another level next season to beat Kimi Antonelli, warning that otherwise it could be “game over” in their Mercedes partnership.

Brundle told Sky Sports News that Russell had not matched Antonelli for speed and consistency, particularly in the second half of tyre stints. He said the shortfall would hit Russell hardest.

Russell entered 2026 as the overwhelming favourite for his first drivers’ title. Antonelli instead won the championship in his second F1 campaign, after his first Grand Prix victory was followed by four more in succession.

Brundle nevertheless believes the experience will make Russell rather than break him: “I actually think it will make him.”
