Cadillac will put Colton Herta in Sergio Perez’s car at the São Paulo Grand Prix. Completing 24 laps at Interlagos would meet the distance requirement for the final point he needs for an FIA superlicence.
Cadillac test driver Colton Herta will drive Sergio Perez’s car in Friday’s first practice at the São Paulo Grand Prix, giving him another chance to secure the final point required for an FIA superlicence.
Herta needs 40 points for the licence. Cadillac believed he had reached that threshold in Mexico, but it later emerged, amid confusion over his previous IndyCar results, that he was still one point short.
His bid was held up at Monza when his car broke down before he covered the 100km required for a session to award a point. At Interlagos, 24 laps meet that distance; if Herta completes the run, he will earn the missing point.
The São Paulo outing will be Herta’s sixth FP1 of the season; teams are only required to run a rookie in four FP1 sessions each year. Earning the superlicence would also keep Cadillac’s 2027 options open: the team is considering retaining Valtteri Bottas alongside Perez for a second season or giving Herta his F1 debut in 2027.
