Mohammed Ben Sulayem says drivers should race rather than manage battery energy, and sketches a possible V8 return with a turbo and small hybrid battery.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has backed Max Verstappen’s criticism of Formula 1’s current power units, saying drivers should focus on racing rather than managing battery energy.

Ben Sulayem has long advocated a V8 return in 2030. In an interview with Viaplay, he said the turbo would remain and described a very mild hybrid system with a small battery that could act as a push-to-pass aid. He said the turbo provides efficiency and low fuel consumption.

Ben Sulayem also wants lighter cars, citing safety and saying they would be easier to control. He called for research-and-development and engine costs to be cut by 50%, with simpler technology and sound that entertains fans also among his priorities.

The timing remains under discussion: Ben Sulayem said negotiations are continuing over when the changes could be introduced.
