Kimi Antonelli said he was still processing his maiden Formula 1 world title after clinching it with third place in Mexico City, with four rounds left.

Kimi Antonelli said he was still trying to process becoming Formula 1 world champion after his third-place finish in Mexico City clinched his maiden title.

“I’m still trying to process it all,” the Mercedes driver said after the race. He described being able to say he was world champion as “incredible” and said the moment would stay with him for the rest of his life.

Antonelli said he felt more tension than usual going into the weekend, knowing what was possible. Sealing the title brought a “huge relief”, he said.

He needed only ninth place to clinch the championship, but finished third after passing Charles Leclerc at the restart. Four rounds remained in the season.

Antonelli said Mercedes would celebrate together that night but still wanted to finish the season by winning the Constructors’ Championship.
