Verstappen said a driver fighting for his seat should not pick a fight with him. Both drivers received one-place grid penalties after the incident.
Max Verstappen said he was “a little disappointed” with Liam Lawson after an incident in second practice for the Mexico Grand Prix. Stewards investigated and gave each driver a one-place grid penalty for the Grand Prix.
The two ran side by side through the stadium section during Verstappen’s attempt to pass Lawson. Verstappen bounced over a kerb and hit the Racing Bulls driver, damaging the bargeboard and floor of Verstappen’s car.
Speaking to Viaplay, Verstappen said he had always supported Lawson, got on well with him and had spoken positively about him within the team. He recalled that Lawson was sent back to Racing Bulls after two races in 2025, saying it had been a tough break for him.
Verstappen said someone fighting for a seat should not pick a fight with him. Referring to his time at Toro Rosso, he said drivers in the same group should respect Red Bull as the senior team and that he had not driven Red Bull drivers off track. His advice to Lawson was to think logically about his situation.
