Lawson said he apologized after the pair made contact in second practice at the Mexico City Grand Prix and thought their conversation had settled the matter, while noting that only Verstappen knew how he felt. Verstappen left the choice between Lawson and Nikola Tsolov for Racing Bulls’ 2027 seat to the team and kept his own view private.
On Saturday morning, Liam Lawson said he had gone to see Max Verstappen to apologize after their contact in second practice at the Mexico City Grand Prix. He thought their conversation had settled the disagreement, but added that only Verstappen knew how he felt.
Lawson said he had not intended to make contact, that it should never happen in practice and that he would learn from it. His apology came a day after Verstappen’s public criticism: on Friday, Verstappen said he could not understand what had gone through Lawson’s mind and considered the behavior unwise for someone still fighting for a 2027 seat.
Asked whether Lawson or Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov deserved the 2027 Racing Bulls seat, Verstappen left the decision to the team. He indicated that he had a personal view but declined to share it.
After qualifying, Lawson said he was trying to score in every race he could and that the seat decision was not his to make.
