After engine penalties worth 30 grid places put him in P21, Max Verstappen said he hoped to make progress and enjoy Sunday's São Paulo Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen will start Sunday's São Paulo Grand Prix from P21 after engine penalties worth 30 grid places. He said he hopes to move forward and enjoy the race.

After Saturday's qualifying, Verstappen said Red Bull had seen an issue and decided to take the penalty at Interlagos. He said São Paulo might be the best place to serve it.

Verstappen incurred the penalties after exceeding his season allocation for the internal-combustion engine, turbocharger and exhaust. Heavy rain delayed the start of qualifying. He progressed from Q1 to Q2 but did not run in Q2, finishing 16th before the penalties put him in P21.

Verstappen said the Q1 plan was to get a lap on the board without taking too much risk, since he knew he would start at the back. In the rain-affected 2024 São Paulo race, he climbed from P17 to victory.
