Pierre Gasly says F1’s leading four teams are too far ahead of the midfield, despite a close fight at the front. He hopes the gap will narrow within a year or two.
Pierre Gasly says Formula 1’s leading four teams are too far ahead of the midfield, leaving the sport split into two competitive groups.
The Alpine driver said the battle among the top four remains tight and exciting for fans. His concern is the separation below them: a major gap lies between fourth and fifth in the standings.
The new regulations introduced in 2026 have contributed to a wider spread, after a 2025 season Gasly called probably the most tightly bunched field in F1. He said he was unsure whether the statistics backed his impression that each new rule cycle first widens the gaps, before they shrink as teams approach the limits of the regulations.
Gasly hopes the field will draw closer within the next year or two. He said the teams behind the leaders need to improve their performance rather than complain about the gap.
