Herta earned the 40th point needed to qualify for an FIA superlicence in São Paulo GP first practice, opening the way to a possible 2027 F1 race seat with Cadillac.
Colton Herta has reached the 40-point threshold for an FIA superlicence, clearing the points hurdle for a possible Cadillac F1 race seat in 2027. He earned the final point in São Paulo Grand Prix first practice, driving Sergio Perez’s Cadillac at Interlagos and completing the 24 laps needed for 100km with seven minutes of the session remaining. Rookie stand-ins earn a superlicence point for completing 100km in an FP1 session.
A week earlier in Mexico City, Herta completed 30 laps in FP1 and earned a point, but he remained short of 40. An error on the IndyCar website had listed him sixth in the 2025 standings instead of seventh; his actual finish was worth four superlicence points, not the six initially expected. His championship results from 2023 to 2025 totalled 35 points, while four Cadillac FP1 points in 2026—from Barcelona, Austria, the United States and Mexico—left him at 39 after Mexico. Cadillac had told RacingNews365 before the Mexican race that Herta was on 39 and one point short; the FIA later confirmed that tally.
