Jacques Villeneuve says Verstappen’s precision and ability to avoid mistakes could weigh in the title fight with Antonelli, though he considers the timing late in the season.
Max Verstappen won the rain-delayed Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia by 2.307 seconds, earning his first victory of 2026 and the first Grand Prix win for Red Bull Ford Powertrains. Kimi Antonelli finished second and now leads George Russell by 84 points after the Mercedes driver retired, GPBeat reports.
Kimi Antonelli said P2 was the most Mercedes could have achieved in the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, where he finished 2.307 seconds behind Max Verstappen. He said Mercedes had faced reliability problems this season; after George Russell retired, Antonelli led his team-mate by 84 points.
At the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, held at Sepang, Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth. He said P2 or P3 might have been possible without his Q2 track-limits violation. The deleted lap left him with fewer fresh sets available for Q3. Before the race, Formula 1 reported that Isack Hadjar’s penalty would move Antonelli to third on the starting grid.
The FIA stewards ordered qualifying lap times listed for Oliver Bearman, Kimi Antonelli and Pierre Gasly to be deleted. Bearman had two entries at Turn 15, while Antonelli and Gasly each had one at Turn 6. Antonelli finished fourth and Gasly ninth in the final qualifying classification.
The Mercedes driver says even a stronger final lap might only have lifted him to second or third after a disrupted qualifying session.
Kimi Antonelli led final practice at Sepang ahead of Max Verstappen, giving Mercedes an encouraging result before qualifying, though team-mate George Russell was fourth.
