Nico Hulkenberg will start Sunday's Sao Paulo Grand Prix fourth after finishing sixth in the rain-affected qualifying session. Grid penalties for George Russell and Charles Leclerc moved him up two places; it was the best qualifying result of the season for both Hulkenberg and Audi.
Asked what he could achieve in the race, Hulkenberg said, “We have to see,” before adding that there was “all to play for”. He said he would try to race cleanly and get the maximum from his good starting position.
Technical issues meant Hulkenberg completed no running on Friday. He described his qualifying performance as a good recovery, saying the rain had helped him make up for the lost track time; he also said he felt confident with the car.
Hulkenberg's only Formula 1 pole came at the Sao Paulo circuit in 2010, in another rain-affected qualifying session.
